Continuing Education Units
Earn Continuing Education Units on select courses through MPC. The University of South Alabama (USA) will provide a mechanism for awarding Continuing Education Units (CEU's) to individuals completing specified MPC Technology Based Training (TBT) Courses. The CEU is a nationally acknowledged measure of an individual's participation in an organized non-credit continuing education experience.
The CEU serves as a unit of measure of an individual's successful completion of an approved non-credit course. Non-credit educational programs are offered by institutions of higher education to meet a variety of educational needs. These programs are generally short-term and structured in a variety of delivery modes.
More and more professional organizations, licensing agencies, certifying bodies, and employers are requiring documentation that effective learning has taken place when individuals participate in continuing education courses and programs. The most commonly used form of recognition and documentation for non-credit continuing education is the CEU.
One CEU is ten (10) contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction
The number of CEU's to be awarded is determined prior to the learning experience and only after the learning objectives have been established. For courses in which there is no instructor present, such as on-line courses, the contact hours are determined after field-testing has shown the average amount of time required to complete the course.
CEU's for MPC's on-line courses are based on the average number of hours required for completing a course as published by MPC. For example: A course with a published estimated completion time of 6 . 8 hours will be calculated as 7 contact hours awarding .7 CEU.
Satisfactory completion is based on mastery of skills and knowledge defined by the course's learning objectives. Satisfactory completion of the course is defined as scoring no less than 80% on each of the courses pre- or post-assessments. CEU's will be awarded only upon satisfactory completion of all units in a course.
The student will need to pay a one-time set-up fee of $25.00 to establish a student record at the University of South Alabama. To record and transcript CEU's, each student will pay a $15.00 recording fee for each submission of completed courses. Multiple courses may be included in each submission. CEU fees will be paid to the University of South Alabama.
It depends. Many professions have Continuing Education requirements for maintaining licenses and certifications. The content requirements and criteria vary from profession to profession and from state to state.
The University of South Alabama will be happy to work with you to seek specialized CEU approvals. Check with your certifying board regarding specific criteria and application processes. Call Patricia Miles at the University of South Alabama to help facilitate the process. Ms. Miles can be reached by phone at 251-431-6411 and by e-mail at pbmiles@usouthal.edu.
Please Note: In most cases for profession-specific CEU's to be granted, a course must be approved by the approving agency before you enroll and begin the course work.
Generally, no CEU's and academic credit serve separate and very different purposes. However, some institutions have prior learning assessment programs that provide guidelines for the assessment of non-credit training and related work experience. Please check with the institution where you are doing degree work for their policies and procedures.
Students wishing to receive CEU's for completing MPC courseware, will need to submit a signed University of South Alabama CEU Set-Up and Recording Form with a report showing utilization and assessment scores through MPC's or a comparable learner management system.
For CEU's to be awarded a score of 80% or better must be achieved on each unit. CEU's will only be awarded upon satisfactory completion of all units in a course.
Step 1: Print your course scores from within the course or learner management system. It is necessary to submit your scores for all assessments within the course.
Step 2: Print and fill out the CEU Set-Up and Recording Form. The form can be printed from PDF file.
Step 3: Submit the CEU Set-Up and Recording Form and printout of course scores to:
Patricia B. Miles, Department of Conference Activities and Special Courses, University of South Alabama, 2001 Old Bay Front Drive, Mobile, AL 36615 or FAX to 251-431-6408.
Step 4: When a student submits the CEU Set-Up and Recording Form and assessment scores, the CEU's will be recorded. A transcript will automatically be sent to the student listing all non-credit courses in the student's permanent record at the University of South Alabama. If additional transcripts are needed, the student may contact Patricia Miles by telephone at 251-431-6411 or by e-mail at pbmiles@usouthal.edu.
